The EU AI Act is often discussed as if it were a single looming deadline. In reality, it unfolds in stages, with very different implications depending on what kind of AI system you have and what role you play.
For many teams, the real challenge isn’t knowing the dates. It’s knowing which dates actually change their work today, and which ones don’t.

The EU AI Act Is Not a Single “Go-Live” Moment
The EU AI Act enters into force once formally adopted, but that moment does not immediately impose full operational obligations on all AI systems.
Instead, the Regulation follows a staged logic:
- Some practices are prohibited early
- Some obligations apply only to specific risk categories
- Many requirements become relevant only when systems are placed on the market or put into service
Understanding this structure matters more than memorizing dates.
What Matters Immediately: Structural Readiness
Before any compliance workflow begins, teams need clarity on three fundamentals:
- Do we actually have an AI system under the Act?
- What role do we play — provider, deployer, distributor, importer?
- Could any of our systems fall into the high-risk category?
These questions are not future-facing. They shape how you design, document, and govern AI systems now, even if enforcement is not yet active.
Teams that postpone this clarity often discover later that they’ve locked in assumptions that are hard to unwind.
Early Triggers: Prohibited Practices and System Design
Certain AI practices are prohibited under the Act. These provisions apply earlier than most technical obligations and are design-relevant, not paperwork-related.
If a system’s intended purpose touches on areas such as:
- manipulative techniques,
- social scoring by public authorities,
- or certain biometric uses,
then the timeline becomes irrelevant — the system may simply not be permissible.
This is why product teams should review intended purpose and use context early, even during experimentation.
What Can Wait (But Should Not Be Ignored)
Many operational obligations — such as conformity assessment and full technical documentation — are linked to high-risk AI systems and to specific lifecycle moments:
- placing a system on the EU market
- putting a system into service
- making substantial modifications
If your system is not high-risk, or not yet moving toward deployment, these steps may not be immediate.
That said, “can wait” does not mean “can be ignored.” Design choices made today often determine whether later compliance is straightforward or painful.
The Common Timing Mistake Teams Make
A recurring pattern we see is teams asking:
“When do we need to comply?”
The better question is:
“Which parts of our current work will be judged later?”
Risk classification, documentation habits, and governance structures tend to be assessed retrospectively. Waiting for a formal deadline does not reset design history.
A Practical Way to Think About the Timeline
Instead of treating the EU AI Act as a countdown clock, treat it as a filter:
- Some systems exit early (prohibited practices)
- Some systems trigger deeper obligations (high-risk AI)
- Some systems remain largely unaffected
Your task now is not full compliance. It is correct positioning.
Once that is clear, timing becomes manageable.
